The biggest night of the year for Broadway is quickly approaching; The TONY Awards. They will be airing live on Sunday June 11 at 8:00. This will be the 71st annual TONY Awards and it will be hosted by Kevin Spacey.
Spacey himself has won a TONY for Best Featured Actor in a Play. He has very big shoes to fill due to how successful last year’s host James Corden was. Corden helped bring in the highest rating for the TONYs in 15 years, according to Variety. Last year’s spike in ratings could have had more to do with its big winner Hamilton than the host but either way, Spacey and the TONYs have a bit of stress on them.
This year’s winners will definitely not be as easy to guess as last years. Hamilton swept the ceremony winning an astounding 11 TONY Awards including Best Musical, Best Leading Actor in a Musical, and Best Score. It was no surprise to anyone when Hamilton took home so many awards, going into the night everyone had a good idea they would win big. This year however is a different story, there are many musicals who stand even in who could take home the awards.
Many predictions are pointing to either Dear Evan Hansen, Come From Away, or Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 taking Best Musical and for Best Play Sweat, Oslo, and Indecent are leading competitors. Whichever of the nominations wins it won’t be as predicted and expected as Hamilton winning Best Musical last year.
When looking at what people are guessing for the acting categories Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen) and Andy Karl (Groundhog Day) are front runners for the Leading Actor award. In the female side of the award Bette Midler (Hello, Dolly!) seems to have a strong likeliness of winning.
The TONY Awards is Broadway’s big night and this year is sure to be suspenseful and hopefully entertaining between having a new host and many musical performances so make sure to tune in and see which plays and musicals take home the trophies.
