You’ve seen them around, all three of them clustered together in an aggravating army of salesmen that’s right, Mattress Firm. Many people wonder, why are there so many Mattress Firms in one small area? What’s the point? These are a few of the burning questions students at East Forsyth have.
Mckenzie Hutchins (’18) depicts her opinion on the subject, “I do not understand one little bit why Kernersville needs three mattress firms in a 10 mile radius of each other on the same street. I just don’t understand it. I once heard a rumor that they were all involved with drugs, but you know it’s probably just rumors.”
Roughly 9,000 specialty bed and mattress stores in the U.S. generated about $11.5 billion in revenue in 2015, according to a report last year from market research firm Ibis World.
A Mattress Firm employee gives a little insight as to why there are so many Mattress Firms. “There are many reasons as to why there are so many Mattress Firms. One of those reasons is because Mattress Firm took over Sleepy’s. Therefore, every Sleepy’s store became a Mattress Firm store. Another reason is because of the fact that there are more options for mattresses, and each store has a variety of different mattresses and supplies to adhere to people’s needs. I personally believe that Mattress Firm makes a great profit from buying out all of these stores, and by placing stores so close to one another. I mean you can find a Mattress Firm around just about every corner, which makes it bring in such a great income.”
According to the Chicago Tribune, Mattress Firm is trying to be the first truly national brand in the mattress space in hopes that scale will give it more leverage over vendors, more efficient operations and better name recognition.
Allee Steelman (18′) states, “It agitates me because it’s a waste of space. I don’t see why any of them are necessary at all and there is absolutely no need for there to be so many Mattress Firms in this one area. You only need a single mattress, and those things last up to 4-8 years.”
But how much of the mattress game they can win is an open question. Between the internet, and places like Costco, it’ll be difficult to accomplish this goal.
