The Clemson Tigers take their second national championship back to Clemson, South Carolina. The Tigers made a historic final drive in the fourth quarter and topped it off with a two yard pass from a Heisman candidate Deshaun Watson to a former walk on but now a Clemson hero Hunter Renfrow. They left one second on the clock and did not give the Alabama Crimson Tide a chance and then it happened. The beast that is the Alabama Crimson Tide had been defeated with a final score of 35-31.
Clemson fans could finally celebrate something they’ve anticipated for so long. One Clemson fan, Jacob Turner (’18) said, “It has to be the best feeling ever when you realize your team is truly the best. When Hunter Renfrow caught that pass, will easily be one of the most unforgettable moments in my life and who knows when it will happen again.”
Nowadays it has turned into Alabama vs All in the college football world. Since 2009, Alabama has played in five national championship games and won four of those national championships. A Louisville fan Chad Everett (20’) claimed “It was relieving to see Alabama finally lose. It’s not often you get to see that and especially to see them lose to an ACC school was even sweeter.”
Now back to Clemson, it has been one hard ride for Coach Dabo Swinney and his Clemson Tigers. Since he took over in 2008 the Tigers have gradually gotten their way to the top. They barely made it to a bowl game 2008 and lost, then won a bowl game in 2009, and lost in 2010. Then 2011 finally became the year the Tigers become a 10 win season team and that has not stopped happening. The Tigers finally made it to the Championship game in 2015 and lost a heart-breaker to the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Seeing the ride Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers have gone through it was what makes this National Championship victory even more satisfying. It took all they had to slay the beast (Alabama) and to do in at the very end of the game was just the icing on the cake.
