Another year, another successful Golden Globes. Per usual the Golden Globes start off award season. It’s the award show that gives everyone an idea of who will be the big winners for this year. It involves recognizing not only movie achievements, but also achievements in television shows.
This year the honor of hosting was given to Jimmy Fallon, The Tonight Show host. With this choice we assumed there would be a lot of laughs during the award show.
The Hollywood Foreign Press is in charge of coming up with the nominees and the winners. La La Land led the most nominations for a film at seven. It was also being looked at to win big during the award show. Moonlight came second with six nominations. They also announced that Meryl Streep would be given the life time achievement award during the show.
Before the show began people tuned into all the pre-shows to watch the red carpet and to see all their favorite celebrities arrive. The Golden Globes take place at the Beverly Hills Hotel every year.
Once the show began, Jimmy Fallon presented his monologue, which always seems to make fun of Hollywood, but still talking about how much the things they do mean to world. After Fallon finished his opening speech the winners began to be announced.
Some of the big winners for television were Claire Foy from The Crown who won Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series-Drama. Billy Bob Thornton took the same award for the male. Foy’s show, The Crown, also took home Best Television Series-Drama. Atlanta snagged two wins both Best Television Series-Musical or Comedy and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, which went to Donald Glover.
In the film categories La La Land, as predicted won huge. It took home all seven of its nomination, which is not normal, especially for a musical. Both its leads won Best Performance by an Actress/Actor in a Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy. The film also took home Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy. The film Moonlight took home the win for Best Motion Picture-Drama.
After winning the Cecile B. DeMille award, Meryl Streep made a very provocative speech. She decided to use her time to speak to say some things about President Elect Donald Trump. Without ever using his name, she denounced his “performance” where he imitated a disabled reporter. “…there was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good, there was nothing good about it, but it was effective and it did its job,” Streep said. After the speech, many were extremely happy with Streep and others were not. Trump commented the next day on Twitter calling Streep “overrated” creating many twitter fights throughout the next few days.
After it was all said and done, the Golden Globes went without mistakes and was overall successful.
