Krispy Kreme is home of warm glazed donuts and hot coffee. Soon enough, you might be able to save the long drive and get your donuts closer to home! The location of the new Krispy Kreme is intended to be on Main Street where the old Burger King was.
Krispy Kreme actually has a history starting very close to home. According to Krispy Kreme’s website, Vernon Rudolph bought a doughnut recipe from a New Orleans French chef. He rented a building in what is now historic Old Salem in Winston-Salem, NC. The Krispy Kreme logo was designed by Benny Dinkins, a local architect. On July 13, 1937 he began selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts to local grocery stores.
When Vernon Rudolph opened his first store, he decided on Winston-Salem, North Carolina for the location when he learned that his favorite cigarette company, Camel Cigarettes, was headquartered in the “small North Carolina city”. The first Krispy Kreme bakery outside the South opened in Akron, Ohio, in 1939. On February 24, 2015 the thousandth store was opened in Kansas City, KS. There are a few hundred stores in just Canada and Mexico alone.
Maddy Shelor (’18) says “I really love Krispy Kreme and now I won’t have to go out of my way if I feel like having a really good donut!”
Not only can you get donuts at Krispy Kreme, but you can get bagels, oatmeal, ice cream, and even donut sundaes! You can get donuts packaged in almost and supermarket in the triad, but the only place you can get a fresh, warm donut is in a Krispy Kreme store.
Karter Baughan (’18) said, “I’m definitely a big fan of Krispy Kreme, I can’t wait till there’s one in Kernersville.”
The location and opening date has not been officially confirmed yet. The idea of a Krispy Kreme is big news for Kernersville.
