Since his departure from the boyband One Direction in March of 2015, Zayn Malik has signed with RCA records and has announced his first solo album titled Mind of Mine which is scheduled to release on March 25.

Zayn Malik was with One Direction for five years. After getting third place with his band mates, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tominson and Niall Horan, on the British X-Factor, they released their first studio album Up All Night in 2011. With major popularity all across the world, the band released three more albums titled Take Me Home, Midnight Memories, and Four. The band was nominated for over two hundred awards, including seven Brit awards, four Billboard Music Awards, and many more.

Many One Direction fans were totally devastated by his exit from the band. Ashlyn Howerton (’17) remembered feeling “completely shocked and upset.” She told us that “One Direction just won’t be the same without him.”

Many also predicted that Malik wouldn’t be as successful on his own compared to the success of One Direction. Those estimates have been proved drastically wrong. According to Billboard.com, Malik’s release of his first single “Pillowtalk” climbed to the number one spot in Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Idolater.com said, “There’s something intrinsically ’80s about the song [Pillowtalk]. It is a deliberate – and understandable – step into a more austere artistic guise.” They also describe the single as “a stride away from the bubblegum pop beats that he created with One Direction and from now on it’s a road of slick R&B.”

Yes, Zayn Malik will be drastically missed from One Direction, but he has proved his worth not only as a great vocalist, but also as a terrific artist. Going solo might have been the decision of a lifetime. See what he has in store on March 25!
