School is not the only thing starting back from winter break. The men’s Eagles basketball team began their conference schedule the same week school returned. This is the meat and potatoes of the basketball season because it determines whether or not the team will make the playoffs.
The Eagles came back from the break with an overall record of five-and-seven. In the annual Frank Spencer Holiday Tournament the Eagles picked up 2 wins over Walkertown and McMichael an one loss to Parkland (maxpreps.com). In the tournament the Eagles were lead by Junior Madison Cone who was selected to the Frank Spencer All Tournament Team.
The Senior statistician and manager for the team, Logan Carter, had some very positive things to say. “The basketball team is full of talent and as long as our boys play together and the chemistry is flowing we win by a lot.” When asked about the upcoming conference games he said, “As we enter [conference play] our boys must put it in their minds that we can because that’s all we need to go on a run.”
Junior Zack Kellum is a starter and key component of the team. He adds a certain intensity and physicality that comes from playing football. “I always like when basketball season comes around,” says Kellum. “It helps keep me in shape for my other sports (football and lacrosse) and I like the change of pace from the Fall season.” He commented on his excitement for the conference schedule saying, “We pretty much have a clean slate and the opportunity to control how the rest of the season goes.”
Although the Eagles have a losing record, do not be fooled, they have lost three games by a mere six points or less. I encourage you to get out to one of their remaining home games! The team plays with heart and has serious potential to win a lot of games!
