The biggest night in country music aired November 4th and didn’t fail to entertain. Between the comedic hosts, Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood, the outstanding performances, and the surprising award winners, the CMA’s did not disappoint their audience.
The show started out with collaboration with Hank Williams Jr. and Eric Church. Then Paisley and Underwood came and introduced the show and did a comic skit, which they have done in years past.
The skit included mostly “digs” at country music artists, other celebrities, and events going on in the media. Some included jokes about teenage dance moves which have become popular (Nay Nay, Whip, and Skanky Leg). Also roasts on Donald Trump and Caitlyn Jenner. The two also tip toed around the divorce of country music singer Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton
Many country music artists performed their hits of the year. Including Keith Urban, Zac Brown Band, Kenny Chesney, Sam Hunt, Little Big Town, Carrie Underwood, Florida Georgia Line, Eric Church, Kelsea Ballerini, Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton, Maddie and Tae, Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean, Kacey Musgrave, and Dierks Bentley.
Austen Clark (’16) is a huge Luke Bryan fan. She really particularly enjoyed his performance on the CMA’s.
Something that was a big hit on the CMA’s this year were the artist collaborations that went on throughout the night. John Mellencamp and Keith Urban performed with each other. The once boy-band heartthrob Justin Timberlake performed with Chris Stapleton. Also Fall Out Boy made an appearance and performed with Thomas Rhett. In the last performance of the night Reba and Brooks and Dunn sang a couple songs together. Kathryn Paulsen (’18) agrees that the collaboration was a success by saying, “It was very cool to see a country artist perform with a pop star like Justin.”
The first award of the night, Single of the Year, went to Little Big Town for their huge hit Girl Crush. Next, Song of the Year was presented, which was also won by Girl Crush, written by Liz Rose, Lori McKenna, and Hillary Lindsey.
Chris Stapleton took the award home for New Artist of the Year. Then Florida Georgia Line was given the award for Vocal Duo of the Year for the third year in a row. Chris Stapleton scored his second award of the night for Album of the Year. Next to walk away with an award was Little Big Town with their second award of the night for Vocal Group of the Year.
The Female and Male vocalist awards were next, and were given to Miranda Lambert and Chris Stapleton. This was Lambert’s 6th year straight winning this award. The award was Stapleton’s 3rd and final award of the night. The biggest award of the night is Entertainer of the Year, and it was given to Luke Bryan.
The award show is a huge night for country music singers and it’s fans, there is always a lot riding on the show needing to be entertaining. And the CMA’s did not hold back. Next year should be even bigger, it’ll be the 50th year anniversary of the CMA awards!
