Sand volleyball is now an official sport here at East Forsyth and this will be the first season ever! Players from volleyball in the fall are very excited about it like senior, Katelyn Hallandsworth (’15) who stated, “I am super excited to be part of the first sand volleyball team at East. I am also excited to share this experience with my friends one last time as a senior.”
“It is not like volleyball in the fall,” stated Coach D, the head sand volleyball coach. She is correct. Instead of a six person team it’s multiple teams from the same school.
Sand volleyball is a two-on-two game. This is state regulated, so that means it is a scholarship sport. The teams of two people are decided by the players and who they feel they work best with. Even though it is multiple teams, schools still compete against each other.
East will face some familiar schools around the county just like any other sport. Schools like RJ Reynolds, West Forsyth, Reagan Mount Tabor, and even Davie all have sand volleyball teams. All of these schools will have teams that are trying to qualify for a regional tournament at the end of the season.
It is set up like wrestling; the teams of two that have the best records out of all the schools will go to the regional tournament at the end of the year to compete for a chance to go to a state wide tournament.
“It was really the team in the fall that got this project rolling. They really wanted this to come to East and I told them that I would try and make it happen” said Coach D.
Sand volleyball is only a women’s sport but it could’ve been a guy’s sport as well. “East Forsyth had enough male interest but, unfortunately other schools in our area did not have enough interest in guys sand volleyball.”
Practices and home matches for East will be held at Triad Park. This is because East Forsyth does not have a sand volleyball court at the school. Some schools however, like Reagan, have a sand volleyball court at the school and can play matches there.
East Forsyth very excited for this new sport. It is a new start to see who will be the dominate team in the conference and what teams advance and win the state title!
